The West End location, which opened its doors on Monday 27 April, is the most ambitious project yet from founders Darren and Natasha Bain, who have spent more than 16 years shaping Brisbane’s fitness and wellness landscape. Their original Function Well opened in Newstead, where it still operates across three levels in the Breakfast Creek Lifestyle Precinct.

A second location at Toombul was lost to the 2022 floods. West End is the fresh chapter, and at 3,000 square metres it is built to be the definitive expression of everything the brand has been working toward.

“Function Well West End is our most elevated offering,” Darren Bain said. “We set out to design a premium, high-performance environment that brings together our four pillars, mindset, movement, nutrition and restoration, to support total wellbeing for our members.”

Four Levels Built Around Yin and Yang

The philosophy running through Function Well has always balanced intensity with stillness, effort with recovery. That yin and yang approach shapes how the West End space is designed, with high-performance training zones on one side of the member experience and a genuinely luxurious restoration offering on the other.

The training side covers a 24/7 gym floor alongside five custom-built boutique studios offering reformer Pilates, a heated immersive yoga room and functional training sessions. The space is also an official HYROX training club, making it one of Brisbane’s primary destinations for the global fitness racing movement, which combines eight kilometres of running with eight functional workout stations.

The recovery side is equally considered. Members move between a sauna, hot and cold plunge pools, compression boots, massage therapy, red light therapy, a Recovery Cave and private recovery suites. It is the kind of restoration offering that previously required a dedicated day spa visit, now built directly into a gym membership.

A premium business and social lounge gives members a third mode entirely: a space to linger, connect, or catch up on work after training.

A Turkish Café Completes the Picture

The nutrition pillar at West End takes the form of Sureyya Kahve, a nutrient-led Turkish café from the team behind KAILO Wellness Medispa. The café reinforces what Function Well has always argued: that food is not a footnote to a fitness routine but an integral part of it. The presence of a full café operator of this calibre on-site signals that West End is designed as a destination, not just a gym you pass through.

A New Wellness Destination For West End

The flagship facility is scheduled to open in April 2026 and will cover about 3000 square metres inside the growing West Village neighbourhood. Information from the brand and local lifestyle publications shows the West End location is designed as a place where people can train, recover and spend time with others without leaving the building. 

The hub includes a 24/7 gym floor and five studios for Pilates, yoga and other group sessions. Reports describe the yoga space as heated and immersive, and note that the Pilates studio will include reformer equipment. These features make the facility large in scale and wide in scope for the surrounding community.

Focus On Recovery And Balance

Sources note that the West End site will offer a wide range of recovery services for both active members and people seeking restorative care. Planned rooms include saunas, hot and cold plunge pools, compression therapy areas, private recovery suites and red light therapy. 

A dedicated Recovery Cave is described as a recovery space for rest after training. Brand materials outline four pillars, mindset, movement, nutrition and restoration, as the base of the West End project. The goal is to balance high-intensity training with structured recovery routines for a range of health needs.

Everyday Convenience For Local Residents

Function Well states that the hub will serve as more than a fitness venue, with a café set to provide nutrient dense food and drinks for members throughout the day. A Business and Social Lounge is also planned to give people space to work, study or meet neighbours between sessions. 

This approach reflects a trend toward health spaces that support daily routines rather than single-purpose visits. Located inside the West Village precinct, the site is likely to attract residents, workers and students seeking a facility that fits busy schedules.

Community Impact And Next Steps

Local lifestyle coverage highlights the project as a significant addition to West End, noting the size of the build and the variety of services planned. Function Well has opened a waitlist for foundation memberships so people can receive updates as construction moves forward.

Completing a Decade of Renewal

The West Village project began more than 10 years ago with a vision to blend heritage, housing and green space in one of Brisbane’s oldest neighbourhoods. Now, with Callista on Park under construction beside Mollison Park, that vision is nearing completion.

Developed by Sekisui House Australia, Callista on Park brings 96 new residences to West End and finalises the masterplan that introduced new green areas and more than 35 retail, dining and health operators to the precinct. Project Director Taku Hashimoto said the final stage reflects the company’s long-held commitment to sustainability, design quality and community connection — values that have guided every phase of the redevelopment.

Generations of Building in West End

Hutchinson Builders, one of Australia’s oldest family-owned construction companies, is leading the build. The company worked on the original Peters Ice Cream factory in 1943 and has been involved in every stage of West Village since 2015. Chairman Scott Hutchinson described the project as a proud continuation of the company’s presence in West End, where it first operated a yard on Montague Road in the 1920s.

This partnership has anchored the redevelopment in local history, linking the area’s industrial past to its new role as a connected inner-city neighbourhood. The precinct sits about 800 metres from Brisbane’s CBD, with a 99/100 walk score and direct access to South Bank via the River Walk — features that have helped make it a practical hub for residents, workers and visitors alike.

Design for Urban Living

Callista on Park has been designed by architecture firm Rothelowman, with apartments positioned to maximise natural light and capture northern and eastern views across the Brisbane CBD. Plans include a rooftop conservatory where wildflowers will grow among grassed areas, along with an infinity pool, spa, BBQ zones, a lounge and a private dining room with a chef’s kitchen.

Apartments are oriented to suit Brisbane’s subtropical lifestyle, and West Village has received 59 local and national awards for its approach to urban renewal and community design.

The Final Chapter of the Masterplan

Construction on Callista on Park is expected to finish in late 2027. Prices start at about $2.4 million for three-bedroom homes, with penthouses reaching around $9 million. A display suite has opened on site in collaboration with Rothelowman.

For Sekisui House, this final stage represents the completion of the entire West Village masterplan — a decade-long, $1.2 billion redevelopment that turned a former industrial block into a connected, walkable community that will continue to serve Brisbane for generations to come.

Developer Sekisui House Australia has submitted updated plans to Brisbane City Council, aiming to cater to a broader demographic in response to evolving market conditions.

Originally envisioned as a 74-apartment tower comprising solely three and four-bedroom residences, Callista on Park will now feature 96 apartments, including a significant increase in two-bedroom options. This adjustment reflects the growing demand for smaller, more affordable apartments.

The revised design, crafted by Rothelowman, maintains the building’s 15-storey height and key architectural elements, such as the rooftop garden and ground-floor childcare centre. 

However, the facade has been refined to incorporate natural stone and contrasting materials, harmonising with the heritage-listed Peter’s Ice Cream Factory.

Construction of Ippin is slowly coming together at the Garden Pavilion in West Village. Owner and restaurateur Kenny Lee secured a section of the second floor overlooking The Common outdoor area. Vie Studio, a Sydney design company, has given the restaurant a semi-open layout that will allow diners to enjoy a fantastic view of the green space below. 

Slated for an April 2023 opening, the Japanese restaurant will be headed by Chef Tatsuya Miwa in the kitchen, where dishes like yakitori, cuttlefish tempura and lobster popcorn will be prepared using locally-sourced seafood, meats and vegetables and then paired with authentic Japanese ingredients. 

Mr Lee and his chef, along with co-owners Helen Lea and Jane Ma, are offering Brisbane a menu similar to Kuon Omasake and will occasionally showcase a ticketed tuna auction or a sake-centric event, just like how it’s done in Japan. So, Brisbane foodies looking for a Japanese dining experience don’t have to travel too far. 

Ippin will also have a pastry chef who will be concocting mouthwatering desserts. To complete the menu, French, Australian and Italian wines, along with sake and a host of cocktails, will be on offer.

Yamas means “cheers” or “‘a toast to good health” in Greek and as the name suggests, there will be an emphasis on banquet dining and share plates here.

Owners Michael Tassis and Caio Rossetto, the same folks behind Fatcow Steak & Lobster and Opa Bar & Mezze at Eagle St, drew inspiration from the traditional Greek restaurants in Thessaloniki, where you can find many restaurants specialising in Greek mezze.

As with the eateries around Thessaloniki, where one would be amazed with the seafood options, the new restaurant will have a live lobster tank to ensure seafood will be served fresh.

Yamas Greek and Drink will serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner with menu highlights such as wagyu beef moussaka, slow-cooked lamb leg and chargrilled lobster.

After a sumptuous dinner, guests can toast over wine, from Yamas’ extensive wine list or from their Aegean-inspired cocktails.

There will be a few similarities with its sister venue Opa Bar & Mezze, but it will have a heavier focus on authentic Greek dishes. Designed by Clui Design, the space will be ‘breezy’ and ‘airy,’ making it a perfect destination for get-togethers.

The latest eatery to land on West End, Kurtosh House opened its first store in Randwick, NSW in 2011. Eight locations later (6 in NSW and one in Victoria), owners felt that it was time for Queensland to have its own Kurtosh store. The new West Village joint on Boundary Street opened recently occupying a space opposite fellow newcomer Anita Gelato.  

Kürtősh House borrowed its name from a popular Hungarian street snack, Kürtőskalács, which is also known as chimney cake for its cylindrical shape. The famous pastry melds two distinct textures:  caramelised crispy flaky crust and soft inner walls. And you can now experience this made-to-order specialty at Kürtősh.

Kurtosh House in West Village also offers slab cakes and a variety of pastries and loaves. Interestingly, slab cakes are sold by weight, so there is no need to buy the entire slab. You could simply ask the friendly staff to cut you a serving of one or each of the available flavours at a size that is just enough to satisfy your craving.

Cake offerings include flourless chocolate cake, tiramisu, cookies and cream, cinnamon and walnut tea cake, mum’s chocolate cake and red forest cake, but keep an eye on their rotating specials as well.

Not to be missed are their scrumptious cookies and pastries offerings which include vegan peanut butter cookies, salted tahini and choc chip cookies, apple danish, raspberry croissant, cheese pocket and peanut butter and raspberry scroll, to name a few.

The coffee counter, meanwhile, serves up rotating choice blends and Teacraft Teas in English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Chai, Peppermint, Chamomile & Gunpowder Green varieties.
