What began as a family venture between Yianni and Soula Passaris has become a long-running fixture in the neighbourhood. When they opened Morning After on the corner of Vulture and Cambridge Streets, the café scene in Brisbane was still evolving.

The owners drew on fine-dining experience to bring restaurant-standard service to a casual brunch setting, at a time when specialty coffee culture was still growing locally. With a sleek interior by designer Alexander Lotersztain of Derlot and a focus on balanced, all-day fare, Morning After quickly drew attention. Its menu offered a thoughtful mix of wholesome, fun and indulgent dishes, while coffee by Five Senses became a defining feature.

A decade on, the café continues to be noted for its attention to food and coffee. To mark the anniversary, the team has launched a limited-edition range of merchandise and coffee collaborations that highlight its partnerships and playful spirit. The line-up includes a T-shirt designed with Breakfast Shirts, a classic cap crafted by Worktones, the team behind Morning After’s aprons, and a reusable Fressko cup.

Coffee fans can also enjoy the special 10-Year Celebration Coffee, created with Five Senses Coffee. The espresso blend, available both in-store and for home brewing, features tasting notes of blueberry cobbler and semi-sweet chocolate. The filter roast lists jasmine tea, blueberry and citrus notes, and both blends feature blueberry highlights.

On Wednesday 15 October, the café will offer 150 free coffees from 7:00 am as a thank-you to the community. In a Facebook post, the team shared their gratitude, writing: “Thank you to everyone who has supported our cafe for 10 years and we cannot wait to celebrate another 10 years with you all.”

West End Site Earmarked for 1,100 New Homes, Parks and Laneways

A $2-billion proposal is set to reshape West End, where developer ICD Property has lodged plans for a six-tower riverfront precinct that will introduce more than 1,100 new homes, parks and public spaces along Donkin and Buchanan streets.

The project site covers more than 16,800 square metres of former industrial land, stretching across four street frontages and 200 metres of direct frontage to Riverside Drive. Under the design by Plus Studio, the plan features five towers of 30 storeys and one tower of 12 storeys.

The masterplan responds to the city’s demand for housing as population growth continues to outpace supply, with vacancy rates at historic lows.

ICD Property has confirmed the development will be staged, with the first two towers containing more than 400 apartments expected to be completed by 2030. This schedule places the first stage ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, aligning the delivery of new housing with a period of significant urban change.

Community and Public Spaces

The scheme includes laneways lined with restaurants, cafes and market spaces, with two new public parks forming part of the community setting. More than 5,000 square metres of open space will be accessible to residents and the wider public, including subtropical boulevards and landscaped connections to the river.

Several mature fig trees, some older than 200 years, will be retained on the site. These trees have been incorporated into the design as central features of the open space network, reflecting the suburb’s established natural character and ecological history.

Housing Diversity and Design Features

In addition to high-rise apartments, the development incorporates townhouse-style homes. Sixteen two-storey townhouses will face Riverside Drive, with a further 11 located along a laneway between Donkin Street and Hockings Street, and two facing Buchanan Street.

The rooftop and podium levels will include shared amenities such as a lap pool, spa, sauna, gym, amphitheatre, coworking areas and exercise studios. Bridges will connect Towers One and Three over the laneway, increasing access and reinforcing the sense of a unified neighbourhood.

Planning Pathway

The planning application, DA A006867661, is currently before Council, with a decision anticipated in early to mid-2026. If approved, the project will proceed in four stages, providing a long-term contribution to Brisbane’s inner-south housing supply and community infrastructure.

ICD Property has emphasised that the development seeks to extend West End’s tradition of connection to culture, community and the Brisbane River. Plus Studio has described the opportunity as a chance to transform an underutilised industrial site into a residential and community-focused landmark.

Can The Broncos End the 18-year Drought and Win the NRL Telstra Premiership?

It was 1992 when the Brisbane Broncos won their first Premiership, led by Alfie Langer who had taken over as skipper when Gene Miles retired. Going back-to-back in 1993 and winning the Super League in 1997. Following up again with a Premiership in 1998 and another at the turn of the millenium in 2000 and again in 2006.

That’s 18 seasons ago. Time flies. Let’s not forget Kevvie put together the majority of the current Broncos side including bringing Reece Walsh from the Warriors, and Walters led them to a Grand Final in 2023.

Then he passed the baton to Madge.

Madge, aka “enemy numero uno” having led the Blues in a massive comeback win against the Maroons, in the 2024 Origin Series. Plenty of locals could not forget that and surely Madge kept his head down for that very reason.

The decision to appoint Maguire was brilliant! A masterclass move by the Broncos Board.

So now after quite a rollercoaster season, where at times the Broncos looked dire yet have far more often looked unbeatable. It’s only in recent weeks though that we have fully understood the resilience and sheer determination of this group.

The Broncos beat the Storm in the final game of the regular season to make the 4, 30-14, at Suncorp and after the game, skipper Paddy Carrigan spoke about the deluge of goal-line defence they had practiced in training.

That’s where their backbone has been developed, the layers of determination, and now the belief that no matter how high the mountain, it can always be climbed.

The “Mission Impossible” of coming back from 14-0 against the 4 time Premiers, now seems a walk in the park compared to the hole the Broncos were in against the Minor Premiers, but in reality both comebacks were miracles of belief and determination.

How much was Paddy Carrigan missed last week (and Billy Walters), and how much fresher will he be as a result? At the same time Payne Haas desperately needs a week off, but give us one more big one, Payne!

King & Loiero vs Carrigan & Haas – Broncos win.

In that final regular season game at Suncorp, Jahrome Hughes was coming off an injury break, and it would be fair to assume he’s now back to full capacity.

Munster & Hughes vs Hunt & Reynolds – Tough call.

Papenhuyzen + Howarth + Meaney vs Walsh + Staggs + Shibabsaki – Broncos win

Warbrick + Coates vs Karapani + Mariner – Broncos win

Grant Atkins did a great job of the Broncos-Panthers last week and is given the honours in the middle for the Grand Final.

18 seasons is a long time. It’s time to put that to bed, boys!

The Grand Final of the NRL Telstra Premiership kicks off at 6.30pm Brisbane Time, this Sunday, October 5. BE VERY CAREFUL AS DAYLIGHT SAVING STARTS ON SUNDAY!
The game will be broadcast live on Nine, Foxtel and Kayo.

West End Man in Hospital After Early Morning Home Invasion Attack

A West End man remains in hospital following a shocking early morning home invasion that has left the tight-knit community reeling.

Queensland Police have charged a 25-year-old Camira man with attempted murder after he allegedly broke into a home on Mollison Street during the early hours of Saturday morning.

The incident unfolded at approximately 5:15am when the accused allegedly entered the residence and attacked a 27-year-old man whilst he slept, inflicting stab wounds to his torso.

In a disturbing escalation, police allege the attacker then began dousing his victim with petrol before being interrupted by another person present in the home. The interruption prompted the alleged offender to flee the scene on foot.

Emergency services, including police and paramedics, responded promptly to the incident. The victim was transported to hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

The swift police investigation led to the arrest of the suspect near a Morayfield shopping centre at 9:30am on Sunday – just over 28 hours after the alleged attack occurred.

A police spokesperson confirmed that the two men were known to each other, though the exact nature of their relationship has not been disclosed as investigations continue.

The 25-year-old has been charged with one count of attempted murder and enter dwelling with intent. He faced Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.

The incident has shocked residents of the usually vibrant and peaceful inner-city suburb. West End, which neighbours South Bank and hugs the Brisbane River, is known for its eclectic mix of cafés, galleries and community spaces.

Mollison Street runs through the heart of the West Village precinct, an area that has seen significant residential development in recent years.

Police have declared the Mollison Street property a crime scene as investigations continue. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact police.

West End Residents Push Back Against 16-Storey Tower Near Primary School

Parents and residents in West End have voiced strong opposition to a proposal for a 16-storey apartment tower directly across from West End State School, warning the project would overwhelm local infrastructure and impact neighbourhood character.

Plans for Vulture Street Development

The proposed mixed-use development at 33 Vulture Street includes 132 dwellings, food and drink outlets, shops or offices, and a rooftop garden.

The design features a three-storey podium that incorporates the preserved facades of an existing commercial character building, with two levels of active frontages facing Vulture Street. Above this, a 13-level tower would house apartments.

Developers have planned 199 car parking spaces and 165 bicycle spaces for residents and visitors.

Community Concerns

The proposal, currently on public notification, has already drawn hundreds of submissions to Brisbane, the vast majority of which are opposed. Residents argued the project far exceeds the site’s zoning allowance of eight storeys, raising concerns about its scale and impact on the surrounding community.

Vanessa Bertagnole, the head of West End State School Parents and Citizens Association, has said that while West End is already experiencing heavy development, this tower would sit directly on the school’s doorstep and place further pressure on infrastructure that is already struggling to keep pace.

Safety, liveability, and school impact

Many residents highlighted traffic and safety issues in their submissions. One submission noted the inclusion of 199 car parks would significantly increase vehicle movements in what is already a congested school zone.

“West End State School is a high-footfall zone, with hundreds of children walking, cycling, or scooting to school daily. The influx of vehicles from this development will exacerbate congestion during peak drop-oƯ and pick-up times, increase overflow parking on narrow streets, and pose unacceptable safety risks to children,” one resident said in their submission.

“I support growth but insist it must be balanced, sensitive, and infrastructure-supported. I believe the proposed development is too intense and inconsiderate of local liveability,” one resident wrote.

Concerns raised included the loss of winter sunlight, reduced solar efficiency for nearby homes, increased noise, and the 16-storey tower’s looming presence over the school. Privacy and student wellbeing were also mentioned as key issues.

The development proposal remains open for public comment, with Council to consider the community feedback before making a final decision.

Artist Jenna Catchpole Shares Grief and Growth in West End Exhibition

This September, West End will host a deeply personal and moving exhibition that blends artistry with memory. Her Flame My Hands marks the first solo show for Brisbane/Meanjin-based ceramic artist Jenna Catchpole (née Thompson), a showcase of vessels shaped not just by clay and fire, but by love, loss, and resilience.

Read: Queensland Ballet’s Newborn Giants Brings Innovation to Thomas Dixon Centre

For Jenna, the exhibition represents a poignant milestone. She was 19 when her mother, Jennene, a talented potter herself, passed away. Now, at 38, Jenna finds herself at the midpoint, 19 years with her mother, 19 years without her. Through ceramics, she honours that bond, holding memory in her hands as tangibly as she holds the clay she shapes.

Photo supplied

After her mother’s passing, Jenna stepped away from pottery, but the pull of the wheel eventually brought her back. In 2013 she began studying with Ray Cavill at Clayschool Brisbane, rediscovering her love for the medium. That return sparked a new chapter in her practice, one that soon expanded into woodfiring, a technique that has since become central to her creative life.

Photo supplied

Woodfiring, with its long hours and unpredictable results, became a way for her to explore both grief and growth. Over days of stoking kilns, fire and ash leave markings that can never be replicated. Each piece in the exhibition has passed through this process in three different kilns, carrying within it traces of time, labour, and elemental transformation.

The vessels are not just objects. They represent conversations between mother and daughter, memory and presence, permanence and impermanence. Textured carvings and dynamic glaze patterns carry the rhythm of both heritage and discovery, reflecting Jenna’s journey of finding beauty in unpredictability.

Hosted at Vacant Assembly on Montague Road, Her Flame My Hands invites visitors to step into an intimate space of remembrance and creativity. More than an exhibition, it is a meditation on connection — how art allows us to hold on, even as time moves forward.

The exhibition runs from 1st – 14th September 2025, with the opening event on Saturday 6th September from 2:000–5:00 p.m. (official speeches at 3:00 p.m). Visitors can explore the works during gallery hours or by appointment.
